SALALM LIII: Conference and New Orleans Information

Hotel Monteleone
New Orleans, Louisiana
May 30-June 3, 2008

Welcome

The landmark Hotel Monteleone in the historic French Quarter is the site of SALALM 2008.

Here, in this little corner of the American South, where European traditions blend with Caribbean influences, the history is as colorful as the local architecture; the food is the stuff of legend.”* A trading site for Amerindians near the mouth of the Mississippi River, the city of New Orleans was founded by the French in 1718, came under the dominion of Spain in 1767, and finally became part of the United States with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. As in the West Indies, the Spanish, French and free people of color created a distinctive Creole culture with influences from Africa, Europe and the colonies. New Orleans ' golden age as a major port and finance center for the cotton-producing South ended with the Civil War. One of the country's oldest cities, New Orleans remains a busy port, with a vibrant culture and historic connections to Latin America and the Caribbean.

New Orleans is now experiencing a renaissance in the wake of the Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Nearly all of the historic landmarks of the city, such as the French Quarter, the historic Creole neighborhoods of Tremé and Marigny, the elegant Garden District, Uptown, and Tulane University escaped substantial damage and have been restored. The city's rich musical life has rebounded, and its famous restaurants have reopened.

Come join us in one of the most unique cities on earth!

Weather

Three words: Hot, Hot, Hot. And sticky. New Orleans has a sub-tropical climate, with warm, wet summers, and average highs in May and June between 84º-90ºF and average lows 64º-72º. Guayaberas, cotton and linen summer clothes are best.
