Edith Bayne Denègre Papers, 1904 - ca.[1913]

The Denègre collection is composed of the travel journals and
corresponding albums of commercial photographs of Edith Bayne Denègre
(1863 - ca. 1936), a native of New Orleans, who between 1904 and 1911
travelled to the St.
Louis Fair, Europe, Cuba, and Panama. In a lively and uninhibited style,
Mrs. Denègre describes the places she visits (with the occacional taint of
the prejudices of her day). Included is also a short history of Mexico,
from the time of the Toltecs to Madero, which she wrote around 1913.
Folder 1
Contains Mrs. Denègre's journal, "Trip to St. Louis Fair," in the form
of letters to her husband, George Denègre. September, 1904. TL (copies),
28 leaves.

Contains 21 commercial photographs of the St. Louis Fair, removed from
her album
Folder 3
Contains the journal, "Trip to Europe." July, 1907. TM, 77
leaves.
Folder 4
Contains the journal, "Trip to Havana," which includes travel to
Matanzas, Cuba, and was made with "Sister Geographic." May, 1909. TM, 14
leaves.
Folder 5
Contains 13 color and 67 black and white commerical
photographs of Cuba, including Havana and Matanzas, removed from album.

Folder 6
Contains the journal, "My Trip to Panama." In Panama she visits Col.
William Crawford Gorgas and views construction on the Canal. January,
1911. TM, 31 leaves.
Folder 7
Contains 63 color and 43 black and white commercial photographs and
post cards of Panama and work on the Panama Canal, removed from album.
Included also are 4 personal photographs taken at a house at Ancon Hill, 3
mementos of the trip, 2 maps of the Panama, and an undated card announcing
Mrs. Denègre's death. 1911.
Folder 8
Contains a brief history entitled "Mexico" by Mrs. Denègre. [ca.
1913]. TM, 37 leaves.
