Asamblea de Tacubaya. Diplomatic Correspondence
1827-1828. This collection consists of six letters and two diplomatic memoranda related to the Asamblea de Tacubaya, the successor to the 1826 Inter-American Congress in Panama. The majority of the documents deal with an attempt by the Ministers for Gran Colombia, Mexican and the Central American Federation to settle a dispute in Central America. 1919-1963. Papers written or collected by this prominent Danish archaeologist of Tulane University's Middle American Research Institute. Of special interest is his diary of anthropological field notes, with watercolor drawings, compiled during the 1925 Tulane University Expedition to Chiapas. Included are his Mexican gun permits, correspondence, published articles, and obituaries. Caravonica Cotton Plantation Company, Report
1912. The Caravonica Cotton Plantation Company, incorporated in New Jersey in 1912, secured lease from R.J. Echeverría to 10,000 acres in Escuintla on the Coyolate River to cultivate Caravonica cotton and extract hardwoods. The report, compiled by consulting engineer D. Sterrett Pindell, informed potential investors of climate, soil fertility, plant yield, production and labor costs, transportation, port facilities, marketing, and projected earnings. Included are 96 photos of Guatemala City, countryside at plantation site, and rural laborers and dwellings. 1 piece. Collection 43.

These two extensive collections of ephemeral materials of unusual historical interest, which continue to grow as the library acquires new pieces. The earlier collection includes hundreds of rare early 19th century broadsides, political pronouncements, edicts and decrees, national constitutions, tracts, and other unique items of a political nature that are often not to be found in any other format. The contemporary collection contains similar materials that mirror current developments in the Isthmus and represent differing sides of the political spectrum.

1 volume, 17 leaves (34 pages), 4 appendices. Copy of the proceedings which created a joint stock company to develop and promote navigation on the Motagua River from the Honduran port of Omoa. The manuscript includes a report by the Secretary of Guatemala's Consulado concerning the venture, the list of the company's stockholders and officials, the company's thirty-five articles of incorporation and a series of reflections about the project by those commissioned to head it. Libro de actas covers city council proceedings from independence to 1839; later items are concerned with the office of the Juez de Paz : notes, records of civil and criminal cases, and condemnation of unattended livestock. Davis, Charles G. (1870-1959). A Trip to Panama in 1913, Diary
1913 November 22-December 16. This diary chronicles the experiences and reactions of Charles G. Davis, a noted expert on ship construction, during a three week cruise from New York to Jamaica and Panama on the S.S. Carrilo. Day, Christopher (1936-) Collection
1910-(1959-1975)-1978. The Christopher Day Collection contains correspondence, field notes, papers and other research materials, written or collected by Day, who was an anthropologist specializing in the study of Jacaltec, a Mayan Language spoken in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. The majority of the collection consists of linguistic and lexicographic materials used by Day to study the Jacaltec language and prepare a Jacaltec-Spanish dictionary. Collection 135.
Denègre, Edith Bayne (1863-ca. 1936) Papers
1904-1913? Travel journals and albums of commercial photographs of Edith Bayne Denegre, a native of New Orleans. She describes in some detail her trips to Cuba in 1909 and Panama in 1911, where she visited Col. William Crawford Gorgas and viewed construction of the Canal. Also includes her short history of Mexico written about 1913. 11 pieces; 190 photographs. Collection 58.

1882-1842; 1971-1982. Collection of research materials used by DeVolder in writing his book, Guadalupe Victoria: His Role in Mexican Independence. 1930-1947. This collection consists of correspondence, notarial acts, clippings, photos, reports and other items that detail the personal and business affairs of Adolfo Diaz, a three time President of Nicaragua. Most items describe Diaz's involvement with the La Luz & Los Angeles Mining Co., and Nicaraguan gold mining. Other items deal with the Nicaraguan political situation after 1940. Velasco Campo, Juan Nepomuceno de (c. 1757-c.1819) Papers
1777-1819. Documents tracing the career of Juan Nepomuceno de Velasco Campo, a priest in the diocese of Chiapas. Included are the orders for his prima tunsura, his licenses to preach, to hear confessions, and to say mass; and testimony presented on his purity of blood, services, and character, etc. 12 dossiers. Viceregal and Ecclesiastical Mexican Collection
1534-1919. Some 3,000 dossiers relating principally to late colonial Mexico (1770-1820), originating in the offices of the Viceroy, Real Audiencia, and bishops of New Spain. Included are church records and inventories, censuses, notarial files, laws and decrees, civil and ecclesiastical suits, and land disputes, with many documents that concern Indian affairs and problems with the church. Walker, Sue Field. The Hacienda of Santa Engracia
August 1, 1978. Independent study presented to Professor Donald Robertson. Includes maps and 50 photographs of the hacienda, located northwest of Ciudad Victoria near the border of Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon, as well as descriptions of the architecture, paintings, furniture, and minor arts. Also includes separate papers on this and other haciendas of northern Mexico. 1 piece; 42 leaves. Collection 104.

1798-1873. Documents relating to the succession of Manuel Ximenez, merchant of Amecameca, Chalco, Mexico; and certain documents from Mexico City. Included are wills, statement of accounts, inventories of property and of the Hacienda de Guadalupe Tepozoapan, deposition of witnesses, mortgage notes. 27 dossiers. Collection 31.
Yucatán Collection
1557-1935. Manuscripts and printed documents in Spanish and Maya relating to the Yucatan peninsula. Most material is dated 1803-1880. Of particular note are the 1557 Crónica de Maní, the Crónica de Yaxkukul, the Crónica de Chicxulub, and the Juan Pío Pérez copy of the lost San Francisco Spanish-Maya / Maya-Spanish dictionary. 267 pieces. Zabalo, Plácido Children's Theater
Consists of fifteen original plays Zabalo wrote for children while still in Cuba (all except for one). Included in the collection is a taped interview of the author. 16 pieces. Collection 50 (21).
Zavala, Diego E., collector, Amnesty International Publications
1988-1994. Printed ephemera published by Amnesty International consisting mostly of newsletters, reports and Urgent Action appeals on civil rights violations worldwide with many in Latin America, especially Peru and Guatemala. Includes a Special Children's Edition from 1990-1994, letters by Zavala in behalf of victims, and posters of Peru. 420 pieces. Collection 118.
Zavala Solís, Joaquín, Collection
1879-1886. Nine copybooks of correspondence by Joaquin Zavala, President of Nicaragua, 1879-1883, with transcriptions by Manuel I. Lopez Alonso. Also 141 letters to Zavala. Material on interoceanic canal, expulsion of Jesuits, uprising of Matagalpa Indians, Instituto de Occidente at León, railroads, telegraph, domestic and foreign relations with Central America, Colombia, U.S., France, and Great Britain. 8.7 linear feet.
