Robert Claxton: Collection on Central America, 1965 - 1992
(Collection 112)

Collection Guide

Prepared by Ruth Olivera, December 1994; revised by Devin Dittfurth, July 1998.

This collection consists primarily of Guatemalan newspapers and clippings from U.S. newspapers relating to events in Guatemala in the 1960's to the 1980's. Yet it includes similar material from El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Belize as well. This collection comes from the files of history professor Robert Claxton of West Georgia College in Carrollton, GA, who received much of the material from José Manuel Montúfar from Guatemala. The correspondence between the two, which is included, reflects a shared right-wing bias of the two men. Despite this, the collection indeed covers the entire political spectrum. Claxton saved all materials, whether left or right-wing oriented, having to do with Central America, especially Guatemala, as well as other non-political materials. The Guatemala earthquake of 1976 is well documented, for instance. Various types of papers other than newspapers are also included.

Box 1
Correspondence

Folder 1
General correspondence and other papers, 1968 - 1981:

The 1968 projected schedule for a study of Costa Rica in 1969, arranged by Robert Claxton. Three ALS's August 13 - September 13, Guatemala City to Hartford, CT, Ryan Rudnicki to Claxton, relating to the writer's geographic observations and his attitude toward Guatemala. A TLS July 18, 1971, Greensboro, NC, Franklin D. Parker to Claxton, accompanying a 25-page typewritten article on the 1969 war between Honduras and El Salvador, plus notes by Claxton. A TLS March 28, 1983, Atlanta, GA, Gene Guerrero of the ACLU to Claxton accompanying copies of letters to and from congressman Wycke Fowler, Jr. on the political situation in Central America. A TLS August 2, 1983, San José, Costa Rica, Milré Lisso to Claxton regarding mission work for children in Costa Rica. An undated copy of a note on the political situation in Central America. An undated Newt Gingrich campaign flyer.

Folder 2
Montúfar correspondence, 1979 - 1986:

The correspondence is chiefly from José Manuel Montúfar in Guatemala City to Claxton. The first TLS September 30, 1979, gives his decidedly right-wing view of world politics, particularly concerning the role of the U.S. toward Central America. The subsequent thirteen letters reflect the same attitude, particularly in referrence to Guatemala. The copy of the one letter from Claxton to Montúfar, Tl October 28, 1979, indicates a similar attitude, as well as a friendship or connection with Republican Congressman Newt Gingrich. Most of Montúfar's letters were sent in late 1979 and early 1980, although they continue through 1986. The letters accompanied or sent at the same time as the many clippings from Guatemalan newspapers form the bulk of the collection. When there is a direct reference to a certain clipping from a newspaper, they are included with the letters.
